“Art is either revolution or plagiarism” – Paul Gaugin
When going into an art opening reception, I am expecting two things: something that I’ve never seen that will blow my mind or there is that referencing or appropriation or homage to a past art legend. Only one is apparent in my experience for most shows but in the case of Bedri Baykam at The Proposition, he did a double whammy. AF came to see the revolution  last April 3rd of the most symbolic item of all – the picture frame and yes it is a readymade ala Marcel Duchamp but that idea is blown out of the water.

“Framed Live Time And Space” featured 7 double-sided empty frames suspended by invisible nylon wire from the ceiling as though they’re floating within the gallery space. So, where’s the art? I asked myself after walking into the space. But as more art aficionados came in to attend the reception that it all made sense. Every person walking into frame created a moving piece of visual art as some even stepped through breaking the plane of 2-D which is the greatest convention in art. The frame is not the quadrant that contains the artwork but becomes an exponential part of the art going experience. By removing it from the wall surface, Baykam created this new idea about readymade and how a viewer experiences the art. The best thing about this installation and thought is the human factor. The people that inhabit the space, walk into the frame or even breaking the plane make the ART. Baykam enthuses that what he is doing is going up a notch with what Duchamp might have even done and if he were alive today, he’d be green with envy. Sacre Bleu! Why didn’t I think of that? Duchamp being jealous is highly amusing and what a novel idea.

Baykam gifted this show an evolutionary tangent where art’s direction is headed. Art is no longer a precious object imprisoned on the walls and forbidden to be touched. He wants people to interact and immerse themselves with his art. Be part of the process and get a genuine experience. After posting a picture on Facebook of the opening, a friend made a speculative comment: Does anything sell at this show? Why yes, one of the pieces that sold was priced at $125,000 which proves that in Art – revolution and plagiarism is a given but execution seals the deal.
