AN OPEN PRESS STATEMENT FROM UPSD/AIAP UNESCO TURKISH NATIONAL COMMITTEE (ASSOCIATION OF TURKISH PROFESSIONAL VISUAL ARTISTS)

WE SEVERELY CONDEMN THE POLICE VIOLENCE AND DETAINING OF MR. OSMAN ERDEN, THE PRESIDENT OF AICA TURKEY AND A FACULTY MEMBER OF THE MIMAR SINAN UNIVERSITY.

The democratic and secular people of Turkey wanted to take the defense of their Gezi Park, the Taksim Square and all their free speech rights and freedom by the occupation starting from the 31st of May, 2013 (#occupygezi). However the anti-democratic and the brutal fascist repression of the police reached now a new shameful stage.

On Saturday, the 13th of July 2013, around Taksim Square and the Pera District, unfortunately "the now traditional" police brutality again took place and many resistants were pounded up by them. As part of this embarrassing and unfair incidents, the President of AICA Turkey and the faculty member of Mimar Sinan University, Osman Erden had also been pounded up in blood and detained. We are extremely sorry and severely condemn these anti-democratic, fascist procedures that could find a place for themselves against all the free speech and resistance rights given in any democratic and secular law system. As he is now released, we wish Osman Erden a speedy physical and moral recovery.

As UPSD Turkey, we are announcing here that, we will proceed to take the defense of the resistance of the secular, democratic regime and the basic principles of Turkey on the trail of Atatürk's thoughts.

And also we are consistently expressing here to all public and to the media that we will be in solidarity with all the artists, intellectuals, corporations and foundations against the whole repression and  brutality of middle age darkness...
