GEZİ’S FIRST ANNIVERSARY EXHIBITION

At the first anniversary of the Gezi protests, which started in İstanbul then spread all over the country in May-June 2013, UPSD (The Largest and International Association of Turkish Professional Artists tied to UNESCO/IAA) and Piramid Sanat (Independent Art Center) are hosting an exhibition about the unforgettable traces of that long month.

The collective show entitled “COME IF YOU DARE!” #resistmyheart I AM SHARING YOU will take place simultaneously in two galleries, UPSD Gallery in Maçka Demokrasi Parkı and Piramid Sanat in Taksim, including 53 artists.

The youngest one among those artists is 13 year old Deniz Yünem while the most “experienced” resistant is the 90 year old artist from Ankara Kayıhan Keskinok. Their common point is sharing the title of “çapulcu” (looter) used as an insult by the Prime minister against all resistants.

The aim of the exhibition is to bring to life the same excitement, common solidarity and belief of the Gezi period with feelings such as pain, relief, astonishment and disillusion, while also making people re-live all those hot days again.

The exhibition is curated by Bedri Baykam and Denizhan Özer (both artists as well) and

the project is coordinated by Öykü Eras.

Besides Baykam and Özer, the 184 page catalog will also comprise articles by Ataol Behramoğlu,

Emin Çetin Girgin, Orhan Aydın, Eyüp Muhçu, Nasuh Mahruki, Osman Erden and Ali Şimşek.

“COME IF YOU DARE!” #resistmyheart I AM SHARING YOU will be on until the 15th of July at the UPSD Gallery and Piramid Sanat.
